Starting a new Career
Starting a new career
Monday, March 12 windy and warm
I am back sitting at the showhome. Sunday was a bust.
I had supper with Susan and her entire family; it was a good time with a great deal of warmth and family friendship. I had a chance to talk with Susan’s brother in law, Bob about his trip to the Caribbean. He and his wife, Louise, had a red sun burn glow about them from their time in the sun. Mathew was at his best being a very good and fun child.
I had a chance to test out the clutch on my car to see if it needed replacing. It pulled through the emergency parking brake, so it may not be as bad as I had thought. Perhaps it was just some fluid on the clutch in the morning. The Acura people suggested the replacement cost would be about a thousand dollars. This is much more than I expected; but that is part of owning a car.
I talked to Dana last night. He is doing well and enjoying his time in Toronto, even-though he has had no work for a while. He is going to get some money back from income tax which will tide him over until he gets called to work. He feels he is doing very well.
He said that Cory is working hard and enjoyed the paintball extravaganza at the Sky Dome that Cory helped stage.
Cheryl is having some difficulty with Andrew’s activities during this last week end. I suggested that she look at this development in a very serious way. We discussed the many undesirable consequences if the situation is not handled quickly and strongly. She is a little reluctant to do what is needed but I am sure after talking to some other people she will do what she is comfortable doing.
Susan took the day off to rest and get cleaned up after the weekend. Good for her.
Warren is off to Vancouver for the week. I don't mind taking some time off from playing squash; my body is a little tired. Perhaps I will play some racquetball with Susan on Wednesday.
The job situation continues to be slow, I talked to a fellow at Head Hunter and Associates about the resume I dropped off last week. He will create a file on me that will automatically respond to any new jobs that come across his desk. I continue to send out job applications. An interesting application for a primer painter at Aero painting in the area was in the journal this Monday; I will take a drive out to the company tomorrow to investigate this a little further.
Wednesday March 14 Sunny and warm
It snowed about 6 inches last night with most of it melting during the day.
I had lunch with Mom today.
John of Rock Solid called today about working as a sales person for them, he was pleased that I would accept. We are to meet Friday to work out the details.
It is the dream job as I described it. It can be long term or short term. I will play it by ear and see where it takes me.
The only regret is the Thursday meetings with the men will be disrupted; although it seems that I am the only person that shows up regularly. None of the other guys are there on a regular basis. The meeting dynamics will change as they have changed before.
With my employment, my squash games with Warren will have to be played in the evening or earlier in the day.
The decision to become employed again has been a concern to me even though I told myself it should not be; I have not been sleeping well, falling asleep late at night and feeling tired during the day. Perhaps this will change when my routine establishes itself. I look forward to checking out what I have to learn and how much time I have to put into the effort of home sales. John and I have discussed the holiday times that I require. My only concern being the family reunion during the Aug. long weekend. The advance the company passed on to me should be enough to cover any costs I have. I should be able to sell at least two homes to cover the advance I received. Where else can I get a job where the starting time is 3:00 in the afternoon with no one looking over my shoulder. All things considered, I should be able to move my finances along and remain at least at neutral and possibly in a positive fashion with some sideline business. The day was uneventful with no customers coming by except for a vendor selling some candy. The day is cool because of the snow but the forecast is for warmer weather. Hopefully the sky will clear up so I can go flying in the next day or two. With Steve no longer working at his old company I expect we can get out for a flight or two.
Saturday, March 17 sunny and plus 8
I spent Friday morning talking to Chris and John at Rock Solid about what they expected in a sales person for their company. We talked for about an hour and a half discussing all the aspects of employment. Generally it seems to be a nice place to work with potential to make a great deal of money without having to do things that are too disruptive. At the least, I will get paid to sit and should be able to cover my expenses in a general fashion. With the economy being what it is I will be able to sell a few house in the next several months. The support from the office is small but if I make my demands known I will be able to get what I want. I am excited about the start of a new journey and direction.
I went to Steve’s going away party at the Keg. The turnout was very good. Steve is a little shell shocked about leaving the company and is not too sure what he is getting into. He is not even aware of what he is getting out of. Holly, Beth and I were the last ones to leave and it was nice to chat with them. Beth was very tired after a previous late night and Holly was her bubbly self. She has a three week old boy that is her third child and this was her first evening out, without him. Her husband was taking care of the children. Dorothy was at the gathering so I made arrangements to have coffee with her in the next few weeks to find out what she is doing.
Had a chance to talk to my old manager, he is tired looking but said things are going well. Felt strange going back and chatting with them, very little has changed, some of the problems in the company have gotten bigger,
Talked to Cory last night. He had company over and was in the middle of a party so he couldn't talk too much. He is ok and doing well he said. We will talk more in the days to come.
Gillian is in the area for the wedding and will be coming to the city on Monday.
Sunday, March 18 Sunny and warm
Well, this is the second day of being a representative for Rock Solid, nothing has changed except a little higher level of stress, I have this unrealistic sense that I should work harder now that I am responsible to these people, although I am still only responsible to myself. I am guaranteed about four months of income at a thousand a month at the minimum. The possibility of selling houses is great because of the faith I have in my ability. It is something I look forward to experiencing- getting a check for $5,000 to $6,000 dollars at one time. I am setting my goal at selling a dozen homes before Christmas this year. I will have to talk to my accountant about setting up a company to help in the expenses area.
Susan and I had a fun time playing racquetball last night but I was worried with the head cold that plagues her. My anger about missing some shots as we were playing is some concern to me but I was able to handle it well as I became aware of my feelings.
Warren should be back this weekend so we are able to play some squash.
If the weather holds I will go flying this afternoon after work.
Monday, March 19 sunny with cloudy periods, + 5 and breezy
Well, things are turning a little hectic. Sunday proved to be a day filled with activity; two people came in wanting to make appointments to begin the process of building homes. One person I had ignored last month came in and I was able to show him a home that was already built. The other people from Fort Sask. were ready to build with another builder but liked our home better and want to investigate things further. I spent a restless night and am trying to settle the anxiety and nervousness that is in my system. I have to be careful that I don't get to anxious about the slow process of selling a home. If they are going to say no they can do that at any time, this is nothing new in the selling game.
Susan is starting to feel better from her cold and she has spent some time with her dad after his small car accident. Gillian has arrived today, some of her luggage is a little late but Air Canada promised that it would arrive soon. The wedding she was at went well and everyone enjoyed themselves.
The two new groups of people have confirmed their appointment times for Tuesday and Wednesday to start the process of building their dream homes. It is a start.
